Is your tongue telling you something?

If you’re fair of complexion, you may be used to people telling you how pale you look, and asking if you’re anaemic. Here’s your reply for next time – stick your tongue out.

Pale tongues are better predictors of anaemia than pale cheeks, fingernails, palms or inner eyelids, according to a study from an Indian hospital. People with healthy pink tongues are very unlikely to have severe anaemia, while half of those with very pale tongues did. A finding that could be life-saving in a resource-poor country.
